KISSHome - AI-supported and user-centered security solutions in Smart Home environments

About the Project

The digital transformation in Germany is progressing. In the course of digitalization, citizens are increasingly storing sensitive data in their private networks. This is boosted by the trend towards working remote. In addition, smart home applications are increasingly finding their way into German households, so that they are already present in almost half of all German households. Unfortunately, IoT devices are often inadequately protected and generally do not allow protective measures to be retrofitted by installing additional software. For these reasons, smart home devices and private home networks are increasingly gaining interest from cyber criminals. The KISSHome project is dedicated to this problem and aims to improve the protection of citizens’ home networks through the use of AI-supported technology. Particular emphasis is placed on protecting the privacy of users and ensuring that the intended solution is user-friendly.

Key aspects

The KISSHome project is developing techniques and methods to ensuring network security, that are based on suitable AI algorithms and also offer a high level of privacy protection. A particular interest of the project is on the acceptance and usability of the resulting security system. The focus is on the users and their requirements and usage behavior. This is ensured by acceptance and usability tests, which are an integral part of the project. During development, additional experts from the consortium’s network are involved in order to transfer knowledge and requirements bidirectionally and ensure the relevance of the resulting solution. Another important aspect of the project is its open approach: the resulting system will be developed as an open source application and integrated into an existing ecosystem with an active community.

Goals

The user-friendly security system for protecting home networks, which is based on the implementation and use of AI algorithms, aims to strengthen the IT security of German citizens. The user-centered and open-source approach is intended to minimize the barriers to using the technology. In this way, KISSHome creates a real application with practical benefits, which supports citizens in the important area of smart home security.
